Wine 8.0 has now been declared as stable. In it were five release candidates which “represents a year of development effort” and over 8,600 changes. The main achievement of this release, as brought out in the patch notes, “is the completion of the conversion to PE format.” The PE conversion itself took four years worth of work! But it’s important to have as this, as this is a “milestone on the road to supporting various features” such as copy protection and x86 application support on ARM.

The patch notes mention for this particular release candidate that it should be “the last…before the final 8.0.” Not as big of an update as previous release candidates, but bug fixes we did get for a few titles, including Dark Souls Remastered, Mafia III, War Mongrels, The Medium, and Sherlock Holmes Chapter One. A total of nine bugs were fixed: #26822 Double click the icon in the title bar should close the window #32643 getsockopt() does not indicate WSAEFAULT when setting optlen too small #45542 WeGame hangs after login.

Wine 8.0 has reached the release candidate stages. RC1 upgraded VKD3D to 1.6, provided an improved joystick control panel, and fixed 52 bugs. Now RC2 has arrived, and with it are 50 bug fixes. Note that from here on out Wine 8.0 is in a feature freeze; only bugs will get fixed from here on out. I now have renewed interest in playing the original Metroid Prime for the GameCube. Why’s that? Because there’s this GORGEOUS HD mod that has finally been released after four years in the making. Just look at the screenshots yourself. The game still looks great nearly 20 years later, but now it got a fan-made upgrade in the visual department that makes it look like the game came out not even five years ago.
