The Thelio desktop family by System76 recently got a visual refresh. Now the base Thelio, as well as the Thelio Mira, are receiving a refresh in the processor department. Previously, if you went with Intel, you would have a 12th-gen processor. For AMD, you had the Ryzen 5000 series. Now, Intel has been upgraded to 13th-gen. Per the press documentation, this new CPU clocks in “about 40% faster with multithreaded tasks” over the previous generation.

The folks over at System76 have been quite busy. A few months ago the Oryx Pro got Alder Lake processors and RTX 30-series Ti GPUs. And just last week they released the new version of the Thelio desktop with swappable accents. Now they’ve upgraded the Oryx Pro once more, both in terms of the screen and the RAM. The RAM has been upgraded from DDR4 to DDR5. According to the press documentation, this newer class of RAM boasts “50 percent faster transfer speeds” over the previous generation while drawing less power.

The Thelio product family from System76 is a series of desktops “that’s powerful, compact, quiet, beautiful, upgradable, backed by liftime support, and manufactured in the United States.” First launched in December of 2018, the Thelio has received several revisions based on customer feedback. It’s now gone through another revision in the visual department, starting today. The wood veneer on the front of the chassis has been replaced with a “slimmer, sleeker accent panel.

The Oryx Pro is a laptop from System76 that features an Alder Lake processor and a powerful RTX 30-series GPU. Per my conversation with Adam Balla, media relations manager at System76, all of System76’s laptops are named after African fauna. In this particular case, the Oryx Pro is named after the antelope, which, according to the African Wildlife Foundation, “are a true desert animal, with a thick, horse-like neck; a short mane; and a compact, muscular body.

Keyboards…I’d argue they’re pretty essential for everyday life. Whether you’re a writer, a web developer, a programmer, or someone who needs to respond to an angry Twitter comment, they’re important to have. There’s arguments to be made on whether the keys should be clicky, tactile, soft, quiet, ergonomic, or how fancy the LEDs should look. Me, I’d rather just be able to type efficiently. I don’t care whether it’s loud, quiet, very large in size or small.

Got some exciting news for you power users out there: the Oryx Pro laptop by System76, while it was already pretty powerful, now has upgraded hardware. It now features an Alder Lake processor – the i7-12700H – with 14 cores, 20 threads, and has a frequency of 1.7-4.7 GHz. The Ti editions of the RTX 3070 or 3080 can also be selected when choosing the specs for the laptop. Full tech specs are as follows:

System76 has partnered with HP, bringing their Pop!_OS distribution to the HP Dev One laptop. Specs are as follows: Octo-core Ryzen 7 PRO 16 GB DDR4 @ 3200MHz 1 TB PCIe NVMe storage 14" FHD anti-glare display The laptop features a “Super” key that replaces the Windows logo that’s typically put on every keyboard. The product, according to the official website, is aimed towards developers. The laptop will be priced at $1,099.

Pop!_OS – the Ubuntu-powered distro created by none other than the geniuses at System76 – has just released 22.04 LTS (long-term support), shortly after the release of Ubuntu 22.04. There’s quite a few exciting things going on with this release, so let’s go over the changes. Software Upgrades As far as base upgrades are concerned, the kernel is using 5.16.19 (kind of surprised they didn’t go with 5.17), Mesa drivers have been upgraded to version 22, and the desktop environment is based off of GNOME 42 with System76’s COSMIC UX spinoff.

Numerous media outlets had reported about the fact that System76 – one of the most prominent Linux-based computer manufacturers out there – was going to tackle an enormous task. That would involve creating a new desktop environment, written in Rust. That was a little over four months ago. Fast forward to yesterday, Destination Linux interviewed Emma Marshall, vice president of customer care at System76. In the episode, Emma was asked what the purpose of this ambitious project was.
